As a 2-y-o Amazonica was impressing in his work but was then troubled by low grade lameness behind which prevented him getting to the track. This may have been a blessing in disguise as he was slightly immature so the extra time has done him good.
Thankfully his work this year had been just as promising so it was no great surprise when he won on debut over 10 furlongs at Leicester on July 14th under a good David Probert ride. Amazonica showed a
terrific attitude as he was twice bumped badly but still quickened in the style of a very promising horse.
A small setback kept him off the track until September 19th at Newmarket where he ran another good race to finish 3rd carrying a hefty 7lb winners penalty. David Probert said he was quite fresh but ran a nice race on a track that didn’t suit ideally.
Owen decided to then enter Amazonica into a ‘novice’ at Southwell (19th Oct) where she met the one time Oaks favourite I’m The One trained by John & Thady Gosden. On weights & ratings we had no chance but I’m The One was coming here off an injury lay off and may have needed the outing.
Amazonica bravely battled with I’m The One to win by a short head under a superb Jason Hart ride. But the drama didn’t end there as the stewards wanted to look at potential interference in the last two furlongs. Thankfully they deemed it “50/50” so we kept the race.

Owen Burrows
Owen Burrows is a respected British racehorse trainer based in Lambourn, Berkshire. He began his career as a long-time assistant to Sir Michael Stoute before taking out his own training licence in 2016. Initially serving as a private trainer for the Shadwell operation, Burrows has since expanded to train for a broader range of owners.
Burrows has achieved significant success with horses like Hukum, who won the Group 1 Coronation Cup in 2022 and the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes in 2023. Other notable horses include Minzaal, winner of the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup, and Anmaat, who secured the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. He is known for his patient approach and continues to be a prominent figure in British flat racing.
