She is a very tough hardy grey mare who had a tremendous first season in bumpers. In October she showed a huge amount of promise on debut when running 4th in an Aintree Bumper that later worked out superbly.
With that experience under her belt Queenofthejukebox duly won at Wetherby and also won a valuable £20k event at Uttoxeter both with Gavin Sheehan in the saddle. In between those two victories she ran with huge credit in a Listed Bumper at Market Rasen. This on a day when she wasn’t ideally placed which saw her forced very wide around the long sweeping bend into the home straight.
Queenofthejukebox made her hurdling debut when sent off “Odds On” at Uttoxeter but could only manage 4th place despite looking sure to win two out. It looked a disappointing effort but she was lame (pulled muscles in her rump) the next day which explains why she didn’t finish off the race as well as hoped. Her next outing came at Southwell (14/12) but connections left the track bitterly disappointed and confused. Sean Bowen said he was going nicely approaching two out but stopped within fifty yards to nothing. Sean’s phrase was “like flicking a switch”.
After treatment for ulcers and a soft palate operation “The Queen” returned to the track at Kempton (2nd Feb) under Gavin Sheehan over two miles which we expected to be short of her best. It was really important to see her enjoy herself, run through the line and we can then plan ahead. In finishing 7th she pleased us as Gavin said she jumped well, took a blow but did stay on when getting her second wind.
We then went handicapping at Wetherby with Sean Bowen in the saddle over 2m4f. In a modestly run race Queenofthejukebox did everything right, led at the last flight but was ‘done for toe’ on the run to the line by a well handicapped & very well backed rival.
Her next outing came in the valuable EBF Final at Newbury (21st March) which is always a fiercely competitive event. Heading to three out ‘Queen’ was in prime position, her jockey Sean Bowen felt she would win so well was she travelling but within another hundred yards the game was over. Sean said a her wind was the cause, she couldn’t breath properly. We’ll ask the Vet to carry out some tests and take it from there.
