Star Walking had a decent first season over hurdles starting with a promising 2nd at Uttoxeter and then a game win at Wincanton when stepping up in trip under Johnny Burke. She also ran with distinction when a close 4th in a 3m Listed race at Doncaster.
However it became apparent as we progressed through the season she was in need of a wind operation. Feedback from top jockeys such as Brian Hughes, Harry Cobden and Johnny is invaluable so she’ll have her palate fired before we see her race again.
The wind operation certainly worked as she ran an excellent 2nd on seasonal debut in a very competitive 3m Mares H’Cap at Ascot. Her jockey Johnny Burke said she came to win her race two out but the lack of a previous run (returning from 220 days off) caught her out.
Harry Fry then ‘circled’ a Mares H’Cap at Kempton (27/12) which looked ideal and that proved to be the case as Star Walking showed a superb attitude to win in a photo. She travelled well, jumped brilliantly and Harry Cobden gave her a great ride on ground she loved.
After Kempton the long term plan was a valuable 3m Listed Hurdle at Kelso (21st March) but it was a hugely disappointing day for everyone involved. Jockey Bryan Carver pulled up after just three flights as she was “making a noise” and never traveling. Bryan did exactly the right thing as it transpired Star Walking had bled quite badly.
Her next run at Chepstow (24th April) showed Kelso to be a blip as she ran a fine 2nd to an unexposed winner. We were thrilled with the run as she travelled and jumped well. This gave us plenty to build upon next season.
