It’s been a steady week for the NFR Team.
 
Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to this week 👇👇

A Cheltenham Catch-Up with Harry Redknapp

While at Cheltenham last Saturday it was great to catch up with one of our owners, Harry Redknapp (Double The Dance). This time though he wasn’t on the Noel Fehily Racing Team — he was in opposition with Taurus Bay!
 
It was lovely to bump into him and introduce him to some of the owners of Adonedeal. As always Harry was great entertainment and very friendly as always. One of our owners Paul Robinson mentioned he was a Spurs (See video)😂. Paul thoroughly enjoyed meeting Harry, as did several of the other owners particularly Don D’Ambrosio who looked in awe.

Michael Fehily has been playing rugby for the past two years, and he absolutely loves it. He plays for Trowbridge Rugby Club and has really enjoyed every moment. His tackling has improved tremendously over the season, showing just how much effort he’s put into developing his game. This week, he was thrilled to be named Player of the Match — a well-deserved achievement. A future rugby star in the making!
The question in a few years time will be “Will he be playing for England or Ireland”???

Laffer curve at sedgefield

Last Sunday, Mark Ball headed to Sedgefield where we had Laffer Curve running in the Novices’ Hurdle. She had run a lovely race on her debut at Wetherby, so we were expecting a bold showing this time.
 
Tristan ended up making the running on her and in hindsight that proved to be the totally wrong tactic. Once again, from two out, she showed that she’s a slightly weaker finisher. We’ll need to change tactics with her going forward — she needs to be dropped in and ridden with loads of confidence and be produced as late as possible.
 
On the plus side, she jumped well and will receive her handicap mark on Tuesday morning which should open up more suitable options for her. A slightly disappointing day, but we’ll learn from it regroup and move forward.

LAFFER CURVE's Owners

Noel headed west to Hereford on Monday where Ski Lodge was having his third start over fences. He’d already put in three solid runs this season, finishing second each time, so we went there hopeful that things might finally fall into place for us.
 
He travelled and jumped well through the early part of the race but unfortunately he took a very heavy fall halfway down the back straight. It looked a serious tumble but thankfully both horse and jockey got up. They were both be a bit sore after it but considering the nature of the fall, we’re just relieved that they’re okay and live to fight another day. We’ll let Ski Lodge recover from this fall now then regroup and make a plan for him going forward.

On Thursday morning, Noel and I headed to Barbury Castle to meet the owners of Out in de Wild and watch him work on the gallops. It’s always a pleasure visiting Alan — he warmly welcomes all the owners into his home and is incredibly hospitable.

I had the chance to sit on the horse and we were very pleased with how he’s coming along. After a few solid pieces of work, he’s now in a really good place. He travelled up the gallops beautifully. He was a very strong traveller in his point-to-point, and that’s still very much the case.

He’s just about ready to step up his work and in terms of timing, that should set us up nicely to get him started in the second half of February.

We were very pleased with him this morning. He’s definitely grown since I last rode him in October and while he’ll continue to grow, he should really start to fill out and strengthen over the summer.

OUT IN DE WILD and his Owners

Insurrection made another long trip up north on Friday, as he did earlier this month, but he may as well have stayed at home.
 
Freddie Keighley, who rode him, missed the break a little which put us on the back foot. They went a very strong gallop and we thought if he kept persisting, the leaders might come back to him. Unfortunately, they never did and in truth he never really travelled or got into the race at any stage.
 
He simply didn’t turn up on the day. After such a good first run it was disappointing. It’s one of those things we’ll just have to draw a line through it.
 
A lot of the Owners travelling up for a few days so despite the result I’m sure they would have had plenty of fun with plenty of stories to be told in the coming weeks 📖 
 
On the plus side we still have 3 miles up our sleeves and that’s what we will be doing next time when he runs in the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival and hopefully that will give him the chance to travel abit sweater.

INSURRECTION's Owners

a busy and important week in ireland

While you’re reading this Noel and I are on a flight to Ireland but not for the Dublin Racing Festival to socialise with the many English heading over, but for one of the busiest and most important weeks of our year.
 
Today, we’re heading to the Ballyvodock point-to-point to watch several races and over the next three days we’ll visit around 20 different trainers point to point yards to look at their 4yr old point to pointers.
 
This week is vital for us. It gives us the chance to see how these young horses are developing, hear directly from trainers how they rate them and build a clearer picture of the strength of the form. By watching who runs against who, we can better judge the quality of each race. A horse might finish fourth on paper but if that race contained a future star the form can be much stronger than it looks. It’s where we try to find an angle and it’s always one of the most productive and informative weeks we spend in Ireland.
