It’s with great sadness that we heard of the passing of owner Melvyn Langdell last week from his daughter Katie. Mel was a great guy and myself and him go way back on a personal level as I rode his first winner for him in his own colours, back in November 2019, on a horse called Templier at Hereford. The rain and mud that day couldn’t dampen anyone’s spirits with Mel getting his first victory in his colours at a national hunt track.

He got great joy out of being a syndicate member in Adonedeal and one of his wishes is for his wife Marilyn and daughter Katie to continue on the ownership in his memory, which goes to show what impact these syndicates have on people and makes us all proud that we can give back this enjoyment to people. They hope to come and meet everyone (plus Adonedeal) at the open day. We offer our deepest condolences to them both and other family members.

A morning on the gallops with owen burrows
First thing Tuesday morning we headed to leading flat trainer Owen Burrows yard in Lambourn for a morning on the gallops to view our unraced 2yr Old Havana Grey colt. Unfortunately we got some news the evening before that he was slightly lame so we didn’t get a chance to see him on the gallops but it’s only minor and basically he has some growing pains. This is common with quite a few two year olds we have purchased over the years and as we saw Tuesday afternoon if you have a bit of patience you will be rewarded like we were with Amazonica. Time is a great healer. He is now going to have his man hood removed and will get back into light training when back at Noel’s in the coming weeks and then back up to Owen’s for a run in the autumn. He’s a beautiful Colt by a sire we love so happy to give him all the time he needs to get the best possible outcome. He looks more of a three year old than a two year old now but all the owners are very understanding and we have to be thankful for that because we are trying to do the best by the horse. Despite this we had a brilliant morning where we saw recent flat winners Mr Tony and Ascending Star on the gallops and Amazonica being loaded onto the lorry before making his Leicester debut. Owen tipped the owners a few winners in the morning so everyone was happy all in all.

AMAZONICA AT LEICESTER
On Tuesday 14th we finally got Amazonica to the track. It hasn’t been an easy ride for him since myself and Noel bought him at the Deauville breeze up sales last may and he trained nicely all through last year and showed very high standards of work but like most two year olds he was growing and needed time in which we gave to him and brought him back into training this year.
He returned to work showing the same level of ability and it was great to get him out at Leicester where he made his debut in a novice stakes over 1mile 2f. The plan and thoughts were that we wanted to get a nice run into him but possibly lacked a little experience but he broke well from the stalls although possibly travelling a little keenly early on. Jockey Dave Probert, quite sensibly, dropped him back in the hope to switch him off and despite being in last place had him in a lovely position where he relaxed and managed to conserve energy whilst being right on the heels of the other runners and was able to watch the race unfold. One tap behind the saddle was all it took 2furlongs out and he dually picked up from there under hands and heels riding to win quite comfortably in the end.
It was great for his owner Tony Chapman, who had shown great patience and never gave a moments complaint when giving the horse plenty of time, to be rewarded. The plan going forward for him will be to head to Haydock on the 7th August for potentially another 1m2f novice stakes there and that will be the next step in that horses plan. We really look forward to that but it was a really nice debut and we were absolutely thrilled. Like Noel told Racing TV “ we only have 7 flat horses but it’s a side of it we love. Myself and Dave are jumping men but it’s good to have a few flat horses to run through the summer and there’s a couple of nice ones still to come out.”

Mick Smith, owner of Ascending Star, enjoyed a days racing meeting Harry Redknapp whilst watching Amazonica.
Tuesday afternoon, fresh off the back of our success, it was great to catch up with jockey Gavin Sheehan and owners Craig Williams and Bill Hutchins where we got in a nice game of golf in the late afternoon at Newbury and Crookham golf course. Having been off with a fractured back for so long it was nice to slowly get back into the game which turned out to be a great game in the end where myself and Bill ended up tying in a teams game with Gavin and Craig. Always nice to catch up with owners over a round of golf and I have a few booked in over the coming weeks so I look forward to catching up with you some of you then whilst playing a few holes.

OPEN DAY – SATURDAY 1ST AUGUST
Saturday 1st August for our annual ‘Noel Fehily Racing Syndicates Open Day’ 
All the horses are nearly all in now and the team are busy riding and getting them going whilst also prepping for our owners day on the 1st August. We look forward to parading a big team of horses so come join the party where we will have food, drink & a bouncy castle will all be available whilst live music will be being played.
Come and join the party – a great chance for you to meet your trainers and jockeys.
There will be a host of festivities, including:
– Plenty of food and drink 
– A bouncy castle for the kids 
– A parade of all the horses 
– Live music

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAFFIE
Whilst Noel was at Stratford with Laffer Curve it was nice to be able to spend a day with some family and friends celebrating my daughter Safiya’s 3rd birthday. Rebecca had done an amazing job getting things together and sorting all the refreshments and a bouncy castle for the children to enjoy and it was just a case of me turning up on the day but I did have a role to play which involved dressing up as a unicorn which let me tell you in 30 plus degree heat definitely wasn’t the easiest. Ventilation seemed low and took me back to my sauna sweating days but it was a small price to pay for the enjoyment it gave and I was soon rewarded with a slice of birthday cake. It’s important to make time for occasions like this and it was a great day with family and friends, Happy Birthday Safiya.

Some of our owners have been over at the World Cup and here we have Mike and Ben Stratford who bumped into Andy and Kirsty Payne when they landed in Miami. They have been to every single England match so far, but unfortunately after last nights defeat to Argentina won’t be flying on to New Jersey.

LAFFER CURVE AT STRATFORD
Last Sunday Noel headed to Stratford where we had Laffer Curve running. She had made her chasing debut at Worcester and finished a good second despite a very bad mistake. Next time at Hexham was a disappointment where she just never really went forward on the day for Harry and she ended up pulling up.
Running at Stratford this time with a slight step up in trip to 2mile 6f ,in the hope of slowing things down and to get her to travel more sweetly, with the added aid of first time cheek pieces which made her a lot sharper and jumping a lot slicker. She travelled all the way to two out, half a mile from home looking like she was in with a great chance of being competitive but yet again she finished weakly from the back of that fence to the line which seems to be the case in all her races.
Despite having her wind operated on and the added headgear she finished into a weakening 5th with Harry unable to produce any excuses, feeling all options have been tried and tested.
Noel had a good chat with the owners and we just feel like now we have come to the end of the road with her and it has been decided that we are going to find her a nice new home which we are currently in the process of doing so. Despite being GBB registered it just hasn’t quite worked out despite being placed on a few occasions. She just unfortunately never got to the heights we thought she would. Going forward she’ll make someone a good maiden point to pointer where hopefully someone can have more fun and success with her just a shame she never got the win for her current owners but we all know winners are never a given in this game.
